Vacation plans this year either Kansas City or Houston Any opinions?

We are planning our vacation this year and these are the 2 cities we are thinking about. Wife wanted to go to Chicago but I said nope.

What were you thinking of doing in these cities?

If those were my choices, I’d stay home.

Sorry for you. We have gone to a bunch of great cities over the years. Last year was Cincinnati

We like to go to museums, zoos, food tours for a history of the city and some cool places to eat, stuff off the beaten path, etc.

Are you planning a whole week in one of those cities?

I haven’t spent much time in either, but if bbq is a fave, KC would be high on my list.

have you ever been to KC?

We do the same, but focus on even smaller cities and outdoor locations. This summer we’ll be in Wichita KS for several days at an event, then roam around Nebraska and Colorado again.

If you come to KC and can take the Gangster Tour it is really good.

My wife likes short trips to off the beaten path get aways. We like quirky and uncrowded and try to avoid touristy type places.

My problem is I have been cooking on a pellet grill and make decent BBQ so if I go somewhere and it sucks I’m pissed

No I haven’t, and I would love to take a long vacation and tour the historical Southern states. But if I lived there, like weenuts, I doubt it would be my vacation plans.

It’s like living on the beach and taking a vacation to a beach. But that’s just me. To each their own. I wasn’t disrespecting either of those places.

My wife likes to have things to do. I could sit in the woods and listen to the birds all day

Is that code for drink beer?

oh we always find a local brewery and bring home beer from the trip.

If I end up in Kansas City, who’s meeting me for a beer?

There are literally hundreds of BBQ places - all of them good. We have the only World War 1 museum in the country. IT’s pretty popular. We have the Nelson Atkins art museum as well as the Kemper museum of contemporary art. ONe of the guys that was in my bike group was the director at the Kemper - he had to leave to tend to family issues in Chicago and is now the Director at Bowser museum in the LA area.

Loose Park was created by the guy who made Hydrox cookies and has a memorial to the Battle of Westport during the civil war. What’s kind of cool to me is that they relate the battle to existing roads and streets to get an idea of where the fighting occurred. Rent a bike and I’ll show you places like Cliff Drive (Kessler Park). The Kansas City museum (local history) is by there.

There is the power and light entertainment district downtown and you can get their on the free streetcar that goes from Crown Center (home of Hallmark Cards) to the River Market district.

There is also Kaw Point, which is where Lewis and Clark had an encampment. IT’s actually easier to get there on a bike than it is a car, and because of that, it’s not very well known here. You get a great view of KC, but what gets me is thinking about how the hell they ever made any progress when you consider that they were going upstream and the current in the river is very visible.

There is the Country Club Plaza, which was the first suburban shopping “mall” in the country. It’s designed to look like Seville Spain… I have one issue with it though…the guy who made it all possible…who made a lot of KC possible…was “cancelled”, so nothing seems to bear his name anymore.

There is an amusement park called Worlds of FUn that is known for roller coasters. They have several of them if you are into that And if you’re here, I’ll take you to the dive bar my bike group frequents…great food there.

There are a ton of breweries here. ONe is pretty close to my house - KC Bier. Authentic German style beer. But there’s a shitload of them. I don’t drink that much beer but the guys in the group have a “pub pass” which gets them a free beer at a lot of these place.
