I would be interested in reading this article but I’m not wanting to pay to read an article. I think the bigger story is that Trump broadcasters hearing how they are the enemy of the people are afraid because we now have a president that is too thin skinned to let negative stories about him to go unpunished. CBS paid hiim millions because of an “altered” 60 minutes interview. But Bush didn’t sue CBS over Dan Rather…and Obama never threatened to pull the licenses of right wing talk radio stations becasue of Rush Limbaugh and the like.
After all his blowhard bullshit, Colbert was outlasted by Trump. Way to go.
None of the four late night shows have been funny in decades. At this point all the hosts are Democrat mouthpieces, trying to couch their shitty politics in comedy.
Good riddance to this asshole and hopefully the other three soon to follow.
NOne of them have been funny, I agree. But Colbert was cancelled because he spoke mean of Trump after Trump threatened to sue, and pull the license of CBS. Never before in hour history has a president threatened the media because of his hurt widdle feelings. He won the fucking election and sued CBS over an altered interview with Harris. Talk about a sore winner. If Obama would have been as thin skinned, Limbaugh would have been cancelled, along wtih the Fox.
Or it could be that the show was losing millions of dollars a year. I realize you have no idea how a business works, but the objective is to make money.
Turmp has threatened CBS. He won a bogus lawsuit. He is on record as calling the media the enemy of the people. And he has threatened them and others because of what they air. Colbert was very critical or Trump, and we have seen that those who are critical of Trump and post mean things about him are running a huge risk. Not being put out of business is even bigger than advertising revenues. And sadly, this congress seems to let Trump do whatever he wants.
Seems clear to me. Colbert was #1 on late night pseudo comedy programming, but his viewership has still dropped about 40% over the last 5-6 years. I read elsewhere that the show employed nearly 200 employees, starting with Colbert at about $15 million/year,. The show simply could not produce the ad revenue needed to support the cost to make it. My guess is that Kimmel and Fallon may not be far behind. That form of programming appears to be a dying breed.
And the show was losing money. I’m sure CNN, MSNBC, Comedy Central or some other joke of a channel will pick him up.
Where will lefties get their important news and information from?
LOL now that’s funny.
I was going to explain it but I can’t do any better than Jim.
Agreed. The TV has so much more competition for eyeballs than it did in the 1970s and 80s when these late night shows were invented.
What’s funny to me is to imagine how these shows became popular before VCRs were widespread.
Were adults really losing lots of sleep, night after night, to watch a comedy program? Carson didn’t start until 11:30, and to me that’s 90 minutes past bed time already.
Letterman was really popular on Late Night, and that didn’t even start until 12:30!
Down or not, Colbert was leading the ratings. The idea that the show was losing $ isn’t plausible.
CBS said the show was losing tens of millions a year, do you have proof showing otherwise?
I think it is a more global problem.
Since Carson, Letterman, and Leno left, late night tv has become a money pit.
Sure it is. Advertisers pay based on the number of eyes watching the programs, and by the age grouping of the viewers. How he performs against the other shows at the same time, especially late night, is secondary. Colbert’s viewership peaked at about 3.8M in 2019-2020, and is now about 2.1M (with only 214K aged 18-49, the prime age for ad pricing). Also, Colbert isn’t technically being fired, he’s been told that his contract will not be renewed nearly a year from now.
Kimmel and Fallon have even fewer viewers in each category. I expect they may each also be gone when their current contracts expire.
After posting my comment, i ran across Nate Silver’s take in my email. Long, but worth a read.
And yeah, he disagrees with me a bit.
CBS also paid off Trump for suing them over a 60 minutes episode. There is proof of that.
Trump threatened to pull their license. There is proof of that too.
Ratings or whatever, it’s awfully convenient that it was cancelled about the same time of all this, and after Colbert was pretty tough on Paramount. But it’s okay…Chip a little here and a little there and pretty soon it’s like Big Yellow Taxi…“don’t it always seem to go that you don’t know what you got til it’s gone”
Yes, Trump sued them and they settled out of court to save the embarrassment of showing how biased they are.
@Bears54 - This also wasn’t the first time that 60 minutes aired a segment that wasn’t factually accurate. Remember the one about former President Bush and 60 minutes
defended their lies by claiming that they didn’t realize that their source had lied to them.
Dan Rather. The Godfather of Fake News!
