Fasting

There have been a lot of articles lately about the health benefits of fasting. In the past I heard of fasting as part of a weight control program but didn’t realize it was beneficial for overall heath even if you don’t need to lose weight.

Does anyone have any opinions about this topic

I do intermittent fasting.
I don’t eat between 7 pm and either 1130 or noon the next day.
It works for me, but the first couple of weeks it wreaks heck on your digestive system, getting rid of stuff in your stomach.
I know a few people that have done 48+ hour fasts and they really clean out the system.

Just by nature I mostly fast from 7pm to 11am. Not to be trendy but I normally eat dinner around 6 then don’t eat till 11am. I don’t wake up hungry.

I used to be a big breakfast guy, but started doing the fasting to jump start weight loss.
It worked so I stayed with it.
I am not anal about it though, I will eat breakfast on the weekends and if someone brings donuts or something to the office I will eat them

I started reading about dry fasting a while back. The body makes water from its own fat stores. That’s how a camel survives in the desert without water. Its hump keeps it hydrated by breaking down its fat stores.

Dry fasting to 72 hours or beyond can have great benefits for cell repair and cancer fighting. But, needless to say, it is difficult to do, and shouldn’t be attempted if someone has health issues.

I wouldn’t recommend fasting often for long periods of time (like over 14ish hours). You can mess up your metabolism by doing it too much/too often.

Body works well in cycles. Eat when hungry. Then give the system a rest once in a while.

Is this going without water?
One of my blood pressure meds is a diuretic so no way I could do that

Yes. The thesis is that consuming lots of water without food dorks up electrolyte balance and can even inhibit weight loss.

Whenever I dabble, I am usually not hardcore about it, but I also don’t try to fill my belly with water. Maybe a sip here or there to alleviate thirst.

I don’t tend to have much thirst when doing so, as long as I avoid the heat.

Have you ever looked at UFC fighters final 48-72 hours before weigh ins?

Sometimes I will eat some boiled eggs. The idea of eating sugar first thing in the morning makes me ill or something greasy.

make sure you are not taking to much. I watch my feet. If I can see the veins, I don’t take it.

Just had an electrolyte level test this morning, will know the results tomorrow.
I am drinking plenty of water, and one of them with a liquid IV every day

It all depends on your dose, etc. You can develop kidney stones and other issues if you take to much.

I assume you’re on hydrochlorothiazide as that is the most common.

No.

Same. I need a quality breakfast to start me off or else I feel like crap.

It’s better for me to go without than to eat junk.

I agree, I also don’t eat for a few hours after waking up. I switch between intermittent fasting (16-8 or 18-6) and the metabolism diet where you eat a few hundred calories every few hours. If you’re trying to get 2,000 calories a day you eat four or five 300 calorie meals or snacks and then a larger meal to get to 2,000 for the day. I also did the carnivore diet for a while which was great, except for the diarrhea.

Pretty sure that is it, and my electrolytes are good

Have you tried anything like Neo40?

No

YOu make look into it. I found the blood pressure medicine has side effects I didn’t like. I still take it but a much smaller dose. I take two neo40 a day and dropped another 20 points.
I don’t retain water like i did with the BP medicine.

Parrot you left me hanging in suspense — what do these fellows do in this situation? Dehydrate themselves massively?

Yes, a few days (5) before the weigh in they water load. Then they start with the dehydration process, no (or minuscule) water until weigh in.
Starvation and sauna for the last two days, some use solar blankets, I have even seen teammates huddle with the fighter who is cutting weight to bring more body heat.
Weigh ins are usually Friday morning for a Saturday night fight, some fighters gain back north of 25 lbs between weigh in and actual fight.
