What do you consider a decent IT salary today without a degree and did you make that amount?
There are a ton of jobs that make close to $100,000 a year that don’t need a college degree.

Many locales are establishing training programs and trade school scholarships for those desiring trade school rather than college.
This guy has been doing it for years.
But you can still find positions in an organization that offer an opportunity to observe what success looks like. And you can pay attention to those you come into contact with in social settings.
I took a Dale Carnegie course and joined the Toatstmasters Club and Rotary 2 years before I got a job in marketing. Those contacts were useful as were friends in a skindiving club I belonged to. I never got around to playing golf but lots of contacts are made in sporting activities. Church contacts can make a big difference too.
Personal referrals from those activities can make a big difference.
A lot of people also start at the bottom at a company and work their way up to a middle class and higher life.
My oldest grandson at 23 with a high school education, is working for a large multi family construction company. This is the third company he’s worked for in the industry. He started in the mud doing site prep. Now he is a supervisor overseeing the interior finish stage of the apartments. He’s making upper 5 figure with a truck allowance, a housing allowance, and a 3 day weekend every other week to come home.
He still keeps an eye on the help wanted ads, he’s found the best way to move up in the industry is to change jobs instead of waiting for bettter jobs in the same company to open.
It’s all about keeping your eyes and your mind open to new opportunites.
Many people, maybe most people, are too easily satisfied with the status quo and afraid to take a chance.
I agree, a lot of people will stay in a crappy minimum wage job and complain that life’s unfair and it’s someone else’s fault.
That’s sadly true, but with today’s resume bots…unless you know someone who had a connection in the company - they wouldn’t know anything about you…
But shortly after I started county IT and reps from every department met to discuss job descriptions and requirements. One of the IT heads said that she wanted to require at least a bachelors degree for any position (including help desk). I said “what about equivalent experience” and she said no. I pointed out that we ran Microsoft software on our servers and used several Microsoft apps, but given that job requirement, Bill Gates couldn’t get a job with the county. I wasn’t qualified to hold my own job.
Companies need a way to screen candidates, how do think they should do it?
My niece works in recruiting for tech company and they’ll get over a thousand resumes for a single job opening. She has a way of eliminating resumes she thinks are bullshit or annoy her, then goes through them again and again until she has the best 10. Then sets up interviews and narrowing down the best person for the job.
And a lot of places use bots. Looking for keywords. If a resume doesn’t have those keywords, odds are it wasn’t forwarded on to your niece to review further.
Using my example of where I worked…if a person wanted an entry level help desk position, but hadn’t been to college or only had an associates degree…and the position requirements were “bachelors degree” and nothing about experience - that persons resume never made it to HR. Thousands of others did…but the first filter wasn’t your niece - it was a bot.
How should a company go through a thousand applications and resumes for one job?
Does everything have to be an argument with you? I simply made a statement that a lot of people will never get a chance because technology is used to “screen” resumes. Those bots can find keywords, but they can’t identify character or work ethic or enthusiasm. Hell…anymore, people don’t even send resumes to individual companies - they go thru indeed.com or monster.com. Technology is great, but if today’s technology were in use 40 years ago, I could never have done what I did in my career.
Lol… It’s not an argument, have you asked you what your solution is.
There isn’t a fucking solution so your question becomes an argument. It’s a downside of technology. Anoher downside of technology is the algorithm on social media, search engines and computers that watches and filters and feeds you only the things you seem to agree with. And as amazing as that is, technology makes us more ignorant since we aren’t getting “the rest of the story”. We are only getting what we have shown an interest in.
I forgot you are a Ludite, never mind.
It’s hilarious watching you ask others that question.
See…that’s fucking arugmentative. I said that there are downsides to technology. That’s all. you just had to do a bit of a personal insult.
I think KC is angry and bitter that his life did not turn out the way he wanted it to so he whines and bitches about everything trying to make others as miserable as he is. He doesn’t want to have a discussion or find solutions to things he believes are problems, he just likes to complain.
