Trivia question, sports, but not

What is the only country to arrive at the 1964 Olympics under one name, and leave under another name?

North Korea?

Nope, 1964.

Though there’s a hint in your guess.

Without looking it up, I was going to guess Zaire. Not quite.

South Korea?

Now, you’re geographically very close. Take a look at Parrot’s guess and it may come up.

I looked it up, but I am not saying it here myself.

Edit: I thought Mobutu had changed the name of the country in the 1960s. I just looked that up and that was in 1971, so I was off by several years.

South Africa?

Yeah, you were on the right track. At some point, Rhodesia became Zaire. During the 64 games, North Rhodesia finalized its independence and became Zambia.

Northern Rhodesia became Zambia in 1964, as you said. Mobutu changed the name of the Democratic Republic of the Congo to Zaire in 1971. It went back to the old name in 1997.

OK, has this ever happened in any other olympics?
I want to use this as a call in trivia question to my local sports radio station and win a free lunch.

I doubt it, but wherever I grabbed it from just said only country in 64.

Thanks for that correction. Why going from memory is often a bad idea.

Rhodesia became Zimbabwe,

Speaking of 1964 - what baseball stadium opened that year

Guessing Shea Stadium based on where you are from. Either that or Candlestick Park.

@wmj — You are correct. Shea Stadium was near the 1964 New York Worlds Fair, as well, and I spent a lot of time at both places.

They added a train stop for Shea Stadium when it opened in 1964 on the Long Island Railroad which made it easy for high school students from Great Neck to get there. Those were the days :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

I was in New York in 2007 when Shea Stadium was in its last years. They had already started construction on Citi Field. I went to a game at Shea Stadium. It was obvious the stadium had seen much better days.

What professional football player was a running back for the Miami Dolphins and subsequently went to Yale Medical School and became an orthopedic surgeon specializing in sports injuries (knee and shoulder)

BM, I went to the NY World’s fair. went on a bus trip there with my father from MA. Can’t remember how many days we stayed there. Do remember that we stayed at the Taft hotel while in NYC.

Here’s another that may surprise people. Who scored the most points in the NBA in the 1980s?

It’s probably not the first few guys that come to mind.
