Then again, NFL owners never seem to find the level of stupidity that suprises me.
It is almost like the Browns saw the Russell Wilson contract and said “hold my beer”.
I believe Watson’s contract was before Wilson’s, and far more stupid. The Broncos made a bad bet and are now in salary cap purgatory. But at the time, most thought it would work out.
The Browns gave a fully guaranteed contract to a guy with serious legal charges pending, ones that could well have stemmed from a difficult to change pathology.
I had the same thought about Watson’s contract coming first. However, I don’t recall many people assuming the Wilson contract would work out for the Broncos. To the contrary, I recall many saying that it was high-risk and also did not make sense in that Wilson had time remaining on his then-current contract. Given how Wilson had performed in his final years in Seattle, the Broncos could have seen how Wilson performed in his first year with them before giving him a king-sized extension.
With the Browns and Watson, Watson had other suitors and at first did not want to give the Browns the time of day. However, the other suitors were not willing to give him a fully guaranteed contract, and that was the only way the Browns were able to get Watson to sign with them. They pretty much sold their soul to get him and they are paying the price.
That was my thought as well…each party to a contract has there duty to perform. If he walks off and fails to perform, he may negate his “guaranteed” contract. IF they cart him off the field, he went down trying, but when he walked off the field…I’m sure Brown’s lawyers may be huddling now.
Nope it turns out he didn’t just walk off the field. Cleveland had 12 men on the filed so he knew they would have to kick field goal. Coaches are idiots
