This should improve my signal strength which is one bar at my residence.
This will be great in natural disasters, for hikers and for people the middle of nowhere. Years ago we drove to Arizona and there was a 100+ mile section between Texas and New Mexico that had no service. It was a back road with nothing for the whole stretch, we saw maybe 2 other cars in an hour and a half.
You should be able to use WiFi calling from home. I learned about that when AT&T had a big outage a couple years.
That is exciting. It will probably cost a bit, but definitely nice to have peace of mind in the middle of nowhere.
I’m sure KC and mcarley will find a way to not be happy about this, or to give the credit to someone other than Elon.
I’m pretty sure texting and 911 calls are free, if you want voice and data they’ll probably charge but in an emergency being able to text loved ones and get important information is pretty important.
Elon and his companies keep knocking it out of the park. If spaceX was public I would Buy Buy Buy.
Places like Yellowstone don’t have cell phone service. Many places in remote areas don’t have cell phone coverage. People traveling on boats are often out of cell range. I can see this service making big money. I have looked into renting a sat phone for vacation trips before. Not that I want to call home but just in case of emergency.
I have used WiFi calling before. Works fine.
ATT limits wifi calling to locked ATT phones only. I had an unlocked phone and ATT would not enable wifi calling.
It is coming. RIght now they are spending a lot of money building the network. That would not be good for their stock. Once they stop spending so much, you will see them go public.
Nas-TEEE! But then that is AT&T.
Suspect a similar sort of handset pickiness to be there for the satellite service. Those of us that choose not to buy thousand dollar phones until the price gets down to 3 or 4 hundred are outta luck.
