To be honest, I think the most scary thing is none of us are guaranteed tomorrow - I have a small $500k death insurance policy worth only $1,500/mo in income
Even God says in the Bible: to dust you come to dust you shall return. The founding fathers like my brother are what I’d call deists, rather than a personal God
The issue is does your soul live on? I think that’s the difference between a distant vs a personal God.
My mother use to jokingly say that the first thing she reads in a newspaper are the obits. Then if she doesn’t see her name she reads the rest of the paper

This reminds me of an episode of the old “Match Game” show with Gene Rayburn. One of the match questions was, “Dumb Donald is so dumb that when he wants to see if he is in the newspaper the first place he looks is…”
