Rickey Henderson, Dead at 65

Just saw this. What a player he was hitting, fielding and driving the opponent crazy every time he got on base.

I remember Henderson very well. He was an all-time great. I remember how he ran circles around the Toronto Blue Jays in the 1989 ALCS and totally had them vexed That was great.

There were two downsides to his career. First, he hung on too long and bounced from team to team after his best days were behind him. I think he would have been better off to have retired earlier.

Second, he had a tendency to be a hot-dog and draw attention to himself. As an example, I recall the day he broke Lou Brock’s stolen base record. As I recall, he picked-up second base, held it up over his head, and pretty much stood there calling attention to himself celebrating. I remember my father saying that Henderson pretty much made an ass of himself.

Later that evening Nolan Ryan threw what I believe was his sixth no-hitter. Ryan, in contrast, was pretty low-key about it, and people were commenting on the contrast between the two. I am also pretty sure that Henderson was a bit steamed that Ryan’s accomplishment took away from what he thought should have been his day.
