Does anyone remember when people took real vacations You gave someone at home an emergency number in case you needed to be reached and then separated yourself from all the stress of everyday life and came home like a new person
That pretty much describes my retirement!
Yes ma’am, I remember, but it took a while to get a real vacation. You see my father was a shopkeeper and our longest vacation was two days. Then after getting to almost retirement, I went with new bride to Alaska for three weeks three weeks. First real vacation I can remember in a really long time.
We go at least one a year if not two.
I used to try to ignore email on vacation. It’s gotten harder over time.
I will go through my personal email just to delete junk. And pretty much stay off social media.
The best was Boy Scout Camp. Could only really get on a couple times a day when near a Wi-Fi spot the dining hall.
It’s difficult to ignore technology on vacation. You grab your phone for restaurant reviews, directions, attractions, things to do, the weather and everything else.
IMO vacations and travel are important, it’s good to get away and see new places. It’s also good to visit family and friends who have moved away.
I think young people travel a lot more then when I was their age, my kid is always going somewhere for a long weekend with his buddies. Today it’s easy to find flights and book hotels and rental cars.
True but you can always set to DND mode.
Things were also very different when people stayed at all inclusive resorts with concierge services than house rentals where you do most of the same things that you do at home
There was also a time when people didn’t answer their phone after a while people would assume they were away on vacation and not want to bother them
Most people never stayed at those. They’re pricey.
20 years ago everyone took those kind of vacations to Mexico, Jamaica, Grand Cayman, etc. All inclusive resorts are huge with the middle class, same with cruises.
For 10 years or so my wife and I spent 6-8 weeks each winter on a little island named Mauke, in the Cook Islands. We’d disconnect from our lives at home and enjoy the simple peaceful lifestyle of the locals. The thing we enjoyed the most was how simple and uncomplicated life on a small tropical island could be.
Here’s a video of Mauke on Christmas Day:
Just got back from 2 weeks in northwest Montana. Stayed at a friends cabin on the flathead river that borders Glacier NP. Left the computer at home, most of the time I didn’t have cell service. Just soaked up the scenery and chilled out. That was a real vacation to me.
To be fair, all inclusive in Cancun or Cozumel is less expensive than most US trips.
It used to be taht you could escape cell phones when you went on a cruise. I remember one cruise…the only place that had decent cell service was St Thomas. Once away from here the phone became a watch.
Still that way unless you want to pay an arm and a leg. We went on a cruise last Christmas and didn’t get the WiFi plan. It was great.
One thing that has also changed is that. a lot of employers expect their employees to be available at all times even when they are on a cruise
And most of those employees aren’t paid enough to do that.
