Question for Winter

What does this all mean? Got this pop up a few days ago and also this morning.

Following the next stable release in July 2025, Discourse will start using some modern browser features which are unavailable on iOS 15, and some other old browsers.

Discourse’s minimum supported iOS version will be updated from 15.7 to 16.7. After that, visitors using older versions of iOS will be shown a basic-html version of community content, and won’t be able to login or interact with the site.

Devices limited to iOS 15 are the iPhone 6s, iPhone SE (gen 1), iPhone 7, and iPad Mini 4. These were all released more than 9 years ago, and are no longer updated by Apple (see iosref.com). Unfortunately, it will not be possible to interact with Discourse on those devices going forwards.

For more recent iOS devices, the OS should be updated to iOS 16.7 or higher.

This change will also affect older versions of other browsers. The minimum Firefox version with support for these features is v128 (July 2024), and the minimum Chrome(ium) version is v119 (Oct 2023).

From today, we’ll be rolling out a warning banner for affected users, with a link to this topic.

On the technical side, the features we’ll be requiring including relative color syntax, subgrid, and lookbehind regex, all of which will enable improved experiences for Discourse users.

:information_source: the original version of this announcement listed 1st May 2025 as the cutoff date. Based on community feedback, that has been pushed back to July 2025.

Sounds like you’re using an old browser that won’t be supported anymore.

If you can’t upgrade, see if chrome works

It does.

I assumed it would. iOS only updates the browser with the os. So once the os updates stop. The browser updates stop

My somewhat ancient, in computer years, Imac’s OS won’t accept a version of Chrome new enough to continue accessing this forum software. Same problem with Safari, too. That’s the good news for most here I’ll assume.

Now for the bad news, I have a newer Mac that will, even though I prefer the OS that’s on the older one. So rest uneasy Trumpkins. Your grouchy chaperone will continue to throw sand in the gears until further notice. Even planned obsolescence won’t come to your rescue.

Nah, we still want to hear from you.

I was thinking curmudgeon

Yep, for at least the next 1,374 days.

What version is it?

Chrome version 103 that best I can tell. Mac OS 10.12.6 Sierra. Other Mac’s running OS 12.7.4 , Chrome version 135.xxx.xxx.xx. Mac could be updated further, but I prefer running an OS or so behind. Fewer bugs in general. I’ve grown more cautious with age, but only in some areas.
