I thought it might be fun to share stories about how we got engaged.
One evening when I was at my then boyfriend’s apartment in New York City, I started to tease him
about something. He then laughed and said if you don’t stop teasing me I might change my mind. When I asked about what he went into another room and came back with an engagement ring for me. At the time I had no idea that he had bought one for me and had been hiding it in his apartment
Since I shared the way my husband proposed to me I decided to also share my first date with him
during the early seventies. We were having dinner at a good Chinese restaurant and I commented how the tea at a Chinese restaurant always tastes much better than when you get tea with Chinese take out. He then said that was because it is brewed loose leaf tea at a Chinese restaurant and how he has around ten different types of loose tea at his apartment. At the time I thought I was a sophisticated New Yorker who had heard every line in the book but when he invited me back to his apartment to sample his teas I thought to myself this guy is cool
You see it all started when I ran away for 46 years to the land of Kinky Friedman and the Texas Jew Boys. The end of that came when my miserable wife croaked after 32 years. Nobody would fault me if I never looked at another woman. Then sister convinced me to see about getting back to Florida.
The church, where i did piano supply for many years, had a little send off, and this chick wistfully asked “Why are you moving to Florida?” It did not register and I could only declare I am a FL cracker, mamas don’t live forever, and mine is 95. Eventually Mama did pass and I remembered the question. Only it took a mutual friend to goad me into picking up the phone. You see some people don’t pay any attention to their email or their fake book.
After a few visits to Texas during the Scam Demic (to check on my rent house), I convinced her to come visit. I had no idea if she would like my place because log house is too small, two stories, too goofy, and yard too big to even think about renting out so I hadda get here.
Might have known as the Bride is a Teacher out of Anchor Point, AK, and a log house is perfectly normal. Not only that but yard is an “old garden” and she never knows what will bloom next. Now instead of surviving by boarding Chinese HS students, she sews and mows and entertains and cooks and cleans and serves at church and crisis pregnancy center. You see I gotta Proverbs 31 girl, and get to spoil her a bit. Only been 4 years and we wish we had another 40.
I planned on proposing to my wife at her sisters wedding.
But she got a little too tipsy for it to be appropriate, and I wanted to make sure she remembered saying yes.
So I asked the next morning ok my 30th birthday, and we went to her parents house for the gift opening engaged.
And FYI, I if ask for her dads blessing
@crparrothead - I am impressed that you did that beautiful tradition. In 2003 our daughter’s then boyfriend called me and my husband to let us know he wanted to marry our daughter and planned to propose to her at the cubs opening home game of the season at Wriggly Field. Our daughter called me after that game and said “I have some exciting news but I think you already know”
