Mahone didn’t need to flop for the refs. From some of the calls they made that led to touchdowns, the refs were already on KC retainers. (And I wanna pull for the Chiefs to do a 3-peat, but it’s getting more difficult.)
You are better than this. Per your comment, I guess the announcers shouldn’t have said anything about it either, since no penalty was called. For that matter, I guess nobody should say anything about a player flopping at all if no penalty is called, period. Heck that applies to any sport, and a bunch of NBA players will be exempt from being criticized.
Bottom line: Mahomes flopped to try to get a call. That the referees didn’t bite doesn’t change that.
Seriously, the more I watch what is going on with the NFL the more I think two rules changes are needed.
First, as soon as a quarterback motions that he will be sliding, the play is blown dead. The sliding rule was put into place to protect the quarterback, not to give him a tool to fake the defense into letting up to avoid a penalty so he can get more yardage.
Second, if a player stays in bounds up to the last possible moment while indicating he will try to gain more yardage and then steps out of bounds such that the opposing player could not avoid hitting him, there will be no penalty for a late hit.
I really hate suggesting those two rules. They go against what I generally believe However, when you have players abusing rules which were put in place to protect them, I start to think differently.
To be fair, I have seen Mahomes fake like he was going out of bounds and then get a few more yards. When this happened I stated he was going to get clocked, deservedly.
If I recall, Walter Payton used to pull a bit of a fake when approaching a sideline, then make a defender regret easing up a bit at the end. And that’s okay for a running back, they’re built for the occasion.
Well…not defending Pat, but I recall when the refs were in the pocket of a team called “The Patriots” when one Tom Brady was playing. It’s funny how success seems to turn officials into homies for the Chiefs.
Another thing to consider is that just one state over from Mahomes is the home of a division rival whose coach served a one year suspension for paying bounties to take out players. But given his success, I’m sure that a lot of NFL coaches would quietly chip in to pay any fine a player incurs for “taking out” Mahomes.
