One of the most under rated artists

The only time I saw Bob Seger in person, he did this, first 45 c1966:

For some reason I gravitate toward his lesser played songs, like this one from 1982-1983 (when the auto industry was struggling):

Under rated, perhaps. But I imagine pretty much everybody has at least one of his albums in their collection. I still have Night Moves and Stranger in Town on vinyl.

JImtoo…Detroit had some of the best rockers ever. But Seger is one of the best.

As a painfully shy guy all those years ago, this song kind of hits home for me. LIstening to this now actually brought a little tear to my eye.

I agree with you, we had many - Alice Cooper, all of Motown (including Rare Earth, their first white group), Grand Funk Railroad (with some starting out as Terry Knight and the Pack), Ted Nugent (and the Amboy Dukes), MC5, Iggy Pop, Mitch Ryder (and the Detroit Wheels), and numerous folks who had one or two records. 1965-75 was a great musical time to be there. I should put something together about this.

I follow an old AM radio station from Orlando (WLOF Channel 95). One of their DJ’s (Bill Vermillion, aka Weird Beard). He was constantly putting lesser heard songs in their playlist. They had this list of the the top 95 songs of 1967. This song never broke the top 100 in the US, but it was #47 in 1967 in Orlando Florida. I was only 10 years old then, so I went to youtube and found this. And I’ll be damned if I didn’t remember it

That record sold much better in Detroit and, according to Wiki, it hit #70 in the US. That was Seger’s second or third single, released not long after the one I cited above. His other single with the Last Heard was Persecution Smith. The Doug Brown mentioned on the label had a local group called Doug Brown and the Omens that Seger was in before trying his own group.

Thanks for letting me get that out of my head so I can make room for more trivia.

I came across this on my Facebook feed. I grew up in Orlando and there was a station (WLOF Channel 95) and they had a tribute to one of the DJ’s - Bill Vermillion, aka Weird Beard. He was responsible for getting a lot of songs into the national spotlight, but I came across this - Detroit and Orlando are 1100 miles apart but they mention in this that he played this and it charted number 1 in Orlando in the 60’s. And when I heard it…I remembered it.

The Bob Seger System released 3 LPs that was the first. Then Noah, which was not that good, and then Mongrel, which has some excellent songs, like this.
