Oldies but Goodies

After spending some time in the car yesterday and listening to a lot of Creedence Clearwater Revival, I offer the following triple double of oldies and a little less old.

Two of my favorites from Don McLean

Bridge Maven, Always been a fan of Don McLean. The first concert, I ever went to was his. Think the year was 1972. Here is one of his lesser known songs from off one of his earlier albums.

It’s possible none of you will have heard of this group, but Don Maddox, the last remaining member of the Maddox Brothers and Rose, died this week. This group was California country before Buck Owens and Merle Haggard, western swing, and rockabilly before the term was invented.

They were discussed in Ken Burns’ Country Music and this performance was shown:

Yeah, I was surprised he included them. They usually don’t get the credit they deserve. They’re not in the country HOF.

What’s the oldest olide you like? Here’s the father of country music, in one of the only videos that exist of him.

Ritchie Valen was only 17 when he died in that tragic plane crash with
Buddy Holly and the Big Bopper in 1959, but in his very short career he had these three hit songs.

I do like Louis Armstrong and His Hot Five (then Hot Seven), 1925-1928. Haven’t found any actual video. I do have the CD set of their recordings.

I also love the 1938 Benny Goodman concert at Carnegie Hall. It was first jazz performance there and may well have been the first jazz concert (performance without dancing). No video, but the performance was recorded. Gene Krupa’s drum performance on Sing, Sing, Sing was just remarkable for the time and wears well 80+ years later.

And, Louis Armstrong played on some of Jimmie Rodgers’ early recordings.

This is the more well known 1968 cover of that song by the Mamas and the Papas
