I turned 78 a few weeks ago and do not take any prescription medication. However I have adjusted my diet within the past year to help with the aging process. This has been a bit of a challenge for me because I use to think that diets were only for people who needed to lose weight and I never had a weight problem

Has anyone else made adjustments to their diet to help with the aging process

Some of the adjustments I made include eating less sugar, eating less ice cream, eating more salmon, eating more eggs, eating more berries, eating more green vegetables, and drinking more water. I also walk everyday but I have done that for most of my life

Honestly, it sounds like you’re doing great. To be 78 and on zero meds is an accomplishment in itself. Your dietary changes sound great too. More salmon, berries, greens, and less sugar are exactly what most Americans should do.

Not because I’m getting older or to lose weight but I’ve been eating more Greek yogurt and berries. I also eat less bread and pasta, more protein. I’ve always tried to limit processed foods and am just taking it up a notch.

You have to watch condiments, lots of crap in them. I’ve been using more avocado oil instead of olive oil, not that it’s any better but I just like it.

I’m on a multitude of meds. Such is the fate for poor choices in my youth. But I pretty much gave up sugar. No soda (not even diet). I will have an occasional alcoholic drink but nothing on a daily basis. I eat smaller portions of food, athough I try do avoid the “reduced fat” foods since they add sugar to compensate for the lack of fat. I have diabetes and have to deal with that. My biggest change though was getting bike into bicycling about 10 years ago. I am 67 and am one of the youngest in my group, but several did a bike ride across Nebraska last week…Most of them were in their mid 70’s. I rode yesterday with a guy who is 82. WE did a history ride Tuesday and one rider was 86. Most of them look younger than I do. I thank God every day that I’m able to ride that bike.

I have tried to lower (not eliminate) carbs and eat less sugar (as I have a piece of key lime pie in front of me) over the last few years.

You need to check labels, there’s a ton of sugar in a lot of things you wouldn’t think would be that high. BBQ rubs and sauce are real high in sugar and salt, the lable will say a couple grams per serving but the serving size is like half a tablespoon. You use a lot more than you think.

Anything labeled low fat or no fat is also loaded with sugar. Fat gives food flavor. Take it out and you have to replace it…and Sugar is the go to ingredient. HOwever, while I haven’t done one in many years, I used to love sugar steaks…take a ribeye steak, put a scary amount of salt on it and the put sugar over that. YOu have to like steaks on the rare side because you don’t want to burn the sugar. They were good…but all good things have to come to an end.

The family curse of diabetes caught up with me 4-5 years ago. Lot less sweets, reduced carbs but not on any type of strict diet. So far I’m keeping it well under control.

I usually buy Greek nonfat plain yogurt from Aldi, the only ingredient is milk. 90 calories, zero fat and 6 grams sugar per serving. My wife likes the regular Greek yogurt with honey from Trader Joe’s, 230 calories, lots of fat and 17 grams sugar. The big difference is mine has 16 grams of protein and hers only 6 for the same 3/4 cup serving.

FYI, Aldi cottage cheese is really good too

I usually eat a couple tablespoons cottage cheese before bedtime, it has casein protein which is slow releasing. A buddy uses cottage cheese for a ton of things, he’ll blend it smooth and add it to eggs, put it in sauces and use it for a mayo substitute.

I’ve found most of Aldi’s products are just as good as most name brands but a lot cheaper. I get my English cucumbers there, less than even Costco. Aldi is 95 cents each, Costco 3 for $5.99.(We eat a lot of cukes.)

@Bears54 - Have you ever had a yasso frozen Greek yogurt bar. They are yummy. My favorite one is pineapple coconut which tastes like a pina colada. I also love their mango bars

I’m not much into sweets or dessert with the occasional exception for good pie, tiramisu or premium ice cream.

You should try Trader Joe’s Horchata Ice Cream. I make an exception for that. It’s GOOD

Speaking of ice cream when I was younger I would only eat Haagan-Dazs premium ice cream which I thought was from Europe by its name. So I was disappointed to learn it was made in Brooklyn NY :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:
