My city recently did some work on the street I ride on a LOT, but they left a bit of a hazard for bikes. I sent a couple of emails but got no response. I sent them some pictures of an area where wider road narrows down to a two lane with a bike lane. But the way they marked the lanes directed cars directly into the bike lane. If you’re just driving by in a car, it’s not that big of a deal. but if you are on a bike, the way the road is striped makes for a "pinch’ where the bike lane starts. so I sent them some pictures from a bikers point of view
This was taken from the bike lane
This was going the other way
I rode by city halll yesterday I talked to the public works director. He had said that he was sorry nobody got back to me, but they are drawing the new layout to change that striping to have the cars move over sooner!
I was telling them situations like this are where cyclists piss people off by ‘taking the lane’, and we do that for our safety. Kansas law says a driver must give a cyclist 3 feet when passing. Kansas law also says a driver cannot cross a solid yellow line. And unfortunately, people tend to know the “yellow line” law more than they do the bike law. While there is room for someone to safely pass, four times in February alone I was almost hit here (I was not taking the lane). At any rate…making them aware of it is getting it changed.
