Misleading Terms

I realize that anyone can call themselves whatever they want on the internet but I think this one is very misleading There is one person who calls himself a nerve and brain specialist who can reverse dementia and refers to himself as a

doctor So out of curiosity I googled him and apparently he can call himself doctor because he is educated to be a chiropractor but that is a far cry from being an MD who is a medical specialist

What made me curious about his credentials is that he

Claims he has methods to reverse dementia that most doctors don’t know about

This reminds me of quack doctors who claimed they could cure cancer with treatments that real

Doctors don’t know about

Is this one of the latest scams for seniors

Chiropractors are doctors. The is a weird nuance in American English. We use the term doctor to mean medical doctor but that isn’t what the word means.

i get treated by chiropractors but I am aware of what they can and can’t do. Dementia? They can’t do anything with that.

you need you back popped? Boom. That’s what they do

In the late sixties and the 70’s when word processing equipment first became available, chiropractors were some of the most prolific users that technology.

They would set up a room in their offices to bang out hundreds of personalized letters expounding the virtues of Chiropractic and all kinds of additional “little known,” “exclusive,” “newly discovered,” “proven effective,” miracle cures and treatments. Many had Robo-pens for the “doctors” signatures.

The common thread through each letter?

YOU HAD TO KEEP COMING BACK TO THEM! because only they could administer the magical cure!

There is a small percentage of them that make very outlandish claims.

The older ones were more nutty. The newer ones are much better.

100% agree

Things are very different now but when I was growing up health insurance companies did not cover

podiatrists or chiropractors.

I get them not covering chiropractic. It was considered alternative. Podiatry is pretty standard though.

Glad mine covers both.

I would be out a lot this year!

Think about the power of the ama. Podiatry was stealing business from the medical field.

I think it was the 1970’s when they were allowed to do surgery.

Even today that varies by state. In some states podiatrists can only do surgery on feet but in other states a podiatrist can do surgery up to the knee

At least one state allows hands. Something they have zero training on.

In Oregon chiropractors can perform minor surgery, deliver children and treat hemarhoids.

I just tend to think of them as another specialty, like cardiology or neurology.

There is something else that can be misleading. I use to think for a physician to call himself a specialist he had to be board certified in that specialty. For example if a person called themselves a plastic surgeon I assumed that physician had to be a board certified plastic surgeon. I didnt realize until

a few years ago when some high profile people had plastic surgery by someone they thought was a board certified plastic surgeon and had very bad results from that surgery. They subsequently found out that the surgeon was not a board certified plastic surgeon

In Missouri they can’t even sign off on a school physical

That is what the ama wanted to avoid. They don’t go to medical school. They go to podiatry school and compete with orthopedic surgeons.

I’m baffled why Oregon has then certified to do so much. My chiropractor thinks it’s for rural medicine. They can do things like remove a wart, stitches, etc. he’s baffled since he doesn’t know any chiropractor who does any of those things but they do have yearly training on it
