KC - A Book for You

Just getting into this book and I like it.

Speaking of drummers. Found these a couple of years ago by accident. Jonathan Moffett was the Drummer for Michael Jackson.

Thanks…I might check that out. I was taught by a cool cat jazz guy back in the late 60’s. I started when I was 12 and he taught me the jazz riffs, but a lot of rock drummers have a jazz infuence. Ralph (my drum teacher) told me about Joe Morello and this guy has always been my idol. Here is a clip from him on the old Conan show. They were playing Take Five, and the middle of his drum solo he dropped a stick. At this time, Joe was basically blind, but he reached back, grabbed a wrong type stick twice and never missed a beat. If you had your eyes closed you’d never know he screwed up.

And I always tought Ringo was cool and recently found that a lot of his sound was due to his grandmother - Ringo is left handed but his grandma thought it was the work of the devil and made him learn to do everything right handed. He said that this gave him a distinctive sound. He is also appreciated because he never tried to “one up” anybody…he played the song and didn’t ebellish it to show off. He said in an interview with Conan (Conan apparently has a fondness for drummers) that his favorite song he played was Rain

This guy was no slouch either, Phil Collins drummer, yeah I know, Chester Thompson.

There’s also a fine documentary about drummers, Count Me In. I think it is on Amazon Prime.

Prime is one of the few streaming sites I have - I’ll check that out…shitty weather will keep me indoors for a couple of days.

When I worked for EDS we did a bank conversion in LA that was hellish. I was able to catch a redeye to Dallas Friday night. As that 727 banked to the east after takeoff…that song was in my headphones. And everytime I hear it I am taken back to that moment. Take me home indeed.

Here is Dave Grohl on his influences.

I always assumed that was a drum machine

Grohl is one of the drummers discussed in the book I recommended to KC.

I can’t read music either…I just feel it. I think that’s why I enjoyed jazz so much. He (and I) are not alone in that - there was an old joke - do you know how to make a drummer stop playing? Put sheet music in front of them.

I can read music, and was a decent Tenor Sax player 30+ years ago. Never kept up with it after high school though.
