Vote here. Criteria, which bear has fattened up the most. Look at before and after pictures.
I saw a segment about this on the Weather channel this morning. The Meteorologists were interviewing a Park ranger.
I posted this morning, but didn’t remember that voting doesn’t open until 9AM CA time. And shortly after, the web site seems to have crashed. I still can’t see it properly.
Fat Bear Week has become very popular.
Brooks Camp, where Brooks Falls is located, is a great place to visit. It’s not the easiest nor is it cheap to get there, but if you ever experience it, you won’t forget the close-up experience of watching the bears of Katmai fish and interact with each other.
If anyone is interested in the best times to go and how to do it the least expensive way just let me know with a post or note.
If you’re a fisherman a float trip down one of the many rivers in the area ties in perfectly with a trip to Brooks Camp to mingle with the bears. It’s not unusual to land lots of huge salmon and/or trout in that part of Alaska. Salmon up to 50 lbs and Rainbow Trout 30+ inches are not uncommon.
That’s what we understand. Bears and fish interact haha! Bears grab and eat fish, and are not at all interested in you a lowly tourist several feet away. We visited Alaska a couple of years ago but it was too early and the fish were not in so no bears and we didn’t do Katmai at all.
For the falls, the 4th of July is usually a good early date with the red salmon showing up first, then the pinks and chum in July and some silvers in Sept all of them have stragglers so there’s usually action downstream of the falls thru Sept and dead fish around into October, (most years.) Trout fishing is good Sept-Oct.
