Is the history behind exile a bad practice

I’m hoping this can be humor and the water cooler. I think humor can be patently ridiculous like the Babylon Bee where people enjoy the satire

I know throughout history, people were in exile or were exiled for committing crimes. I’m thinking people might be a fugitive to a country without an extradition treaty. Throughout history, royalty may have been offered it to even escape the death penalty. Should exile become an option again?

What crimes would exile be a good option? Should the individuals be in the community or a remote location depending on the crimes committed?

It would be interesting if a person could receive exile / amnesty as part of a plea deal. Was it cruel and unusual punishment? Or was it actually a good practice compared to the alternatives?
