I received a notice (IRS CP53E) from the IRS that they could not direct deposit my 2025 FIT refund. According to the 2025 return I filed this year, and the IRS’s transcript of it, I am not due a refund and I don’t want to register a bank account with the IRS for on-going payments and debits.
There is no on-line help path that addresses this problem.
I’m confused. Why would they direct deposit a refund if your tax return you filed showed you are not due a refund?
Or, does that not match what you filed? If so, my first guess would be that someone filed under your SSN and if so, it can take over a year to get your refund.
Their transcript of my return shows no refund due.
The CP53E says “We couldn’t direct deposit your 2025 Form 1040-SR refund”
I guess it could be that there was a small amount not shown on their transcript of my return that they tried to direct deposit. Or it might be that they want everyone to register an on-going account with them. They debited the one-time account that I had on my 1040 for the amount due with my return 4 days after I filed online.
