If you had to do it over again, what career would you choose?

Good question, I am happy with my job, although I may have liked to be a coach without having to deal with the being an educator part of it.

I like my job and the company I work for. I don’t mind the work, I get along with most of my coworkers and the compensation has allowed me to have a pretty good life and save more than enough in retirement accounts to not have worry for the rest of my life.

NOthing. But it has nothing to do with a career satisfaction. I was in IT. I met the woman I would later marry thru my job. She gave me a daughter who gave me a grandson that I would not have had we not met at EDS. If I had a different career, I never would have met her.

I would have liked to a physician when medical care was run by doctors instead of corporations

Engineers solve problems and I am glad my dean convinced me to stick when I told him I wanted to bail. Had five multi year careers and finished up doing Unix sysadmin at the VA.

The other possibility was music but I never was good enough for pro level stuff and I would be broke. Doesn’t keep me from contributing and I think was helpful in attracting a new bride at over 70.

even though I would have liked to be a doctor if I thought that was an option for a woman when I was in high school I enjoyed the career I had especially having my own real estate appraisal business

Real estate sales.

RE sales has the advantage of low initial investment, low risk, high pay and flexible work schedules (not flexible hours during that working schedule but flexible weeks/months away from work.)

One contributor to my divorce was my wife’s occupation kept her away pretty much all the time - 7 days a week. That occupation was realtor. Maybe a real estate investor can do that, but she had to hustle for listings and showings.

Yeah… RE sales is a real grind, time is not your own and hours 8-6+ 7 days a week. Average annual income is somewhere around $30-40k.

The secret to making money in real estate for couples is to go all-in for both of you. If you’re single take a year to learn the business, then hire an assistant to keep up with administrivia and make it to the top ten percent of agents in your market. If you’re not in the top 10% within 3-5 years look for a different occupation. Income for top ten agents in most markets is from net $150k to $500k annually.

Once you are rolling you can bail for 2-3 months a year and do some unwinding, we traveled.

You need a good understanding of how people make decisions and good people skills to get there and stay there.

Engineer. When I started college in business, I wanted to take calc and physics but they wouldn’t let me enroll because they were for engineering students. As a senior I took these classes as elective and loved them. I looked into switching and I would be restarting as freshman. After I graduated and had my CPA I went back to school to work on engineering degree. Got about 60 hours into it but life got in the way of finishing. All in I have 210 total credit hours.

Sports would be great, but normal talk radio works too.

I don’t think I’d do much different. I’ve had an interesting life and I haven’t wanted for much.

I’ve been very fortunate that every weird side diversion as been good for me.

I would not change my career field. There are a few different decisions I would make within the frame of my career, but overall very happy.
