I’m detoxing from caffeine

56 hours sober and feeling good.

Curious, has anyone else done this? If so, why did you and what was your experience?

Plan is a monthlong detox, then probably do decaf. Maybe the real stuff once a week or less.

I’m seeking deeper sleep. Been averaging less than 45 minutes of Stage 3/4 per night.

Yesterday was rough with withdrawal symptoms, but today was smooth.

Interested in seeing how it goes for a month.

I haven’t gone that long. Thought it might have contributed to my a-fib, but doc was skeptical and info I can find suggests it’s not likely. I try to keep it to moderate.

Did you have any withdrawal symptoms…like the caffeine headaches? My wife went through that when she got pregnant with our first child.

I’m considering this, also looking for better sleep. Closest I’ve come is accidentally drinking decaf for 3 days, and I know it still has some caffeine.

I tried a while back but got a pretty nasty headache. I’ve contemplated mixing decaf and regular to “wean” myself off caffeine but cold turkey wasn’t fun at all. I may try mixing it again, but for now it’s still one of my vices.

I’ve cut way back on coffee over the last couple years and sometimes go a day or two with none and it doesn’t effect me. I used to drink at least 40 ounces a day, now I drink one cup of strong good coffee or an espresso.

My husband didn’t like coffee and never drank it. However, he loved tea and brewed a fresh pot of it every day when he was alive.

I no longer drink coffee after lunch time

I’m in a similar place. Can’t really confirm anywhere that caffeine is causing problems, but I suspect it.

I’ve found there is a ton of pro-caffeine bias in our culture, including in medicine. I think a lot of people are in denial about how powerful a drug this is.

What helped me decide to do this was reading/hearing from testimonials how dramatically people’s lives improved once they cut this stuff out completely.

Headache wasn’t terrible. I did have some general fogginess and lethargy, though.

They say the headaches occur due to the increased blood flow to the brain, since caffeine constricts the blood vessels.

My muscles have been more pumped up since quitting, likely due to this increased blood flow. I’m also drinking more water and eating more. Before, coffee would suppress my appetite and make me not want to eat or drink much.

3-10% of the caffeine in regular. To my mind that is negligible. I wouldn’t drink it in the evening, but I could probably down a pot of decaf early in the day and only have 100 mg in my system. 12 hours later it would be down to 25 mg.

A single cup of regular coffee (depending on size) can be 100-250 mg caffeine. Single shot of espresso 75 mg.

That is the real test in my opinion. If you can cut it for a few days and not miss it.

I was drinking a ton before like you were. It wasn’t uncommon for me to go through a pot or more a day. That suppressed my appetite quite a bit, and I wasn’t exercising much. Ultimately sapped my energy rather than increasing it.

I was thin, but I gave myself an addiction, along with chronic sleep and stress issues.

Same as your late Husband. Don’t like coffee. I like tea, whether it be hot or iced tea.

I went about two days, got such severe headaches I quit.

Years ago. Army basic training.

Everything was such a blur I don’t remember. No caffeine for sixteen weeks or so.

Coffee. Tea. Chocolate. Etc all contain stimulants.

I have 1 cup of coffee a day and some tea. I cut out all soda and I rarely eat chocolate. I don’t have a sweet tooth

I used to think of ginger ale as only a mixer, but that is the one soda a day I will drink now.

The headaches usually go away after 2-3 days at most.

My headaches abated after day 1, but I am still fighting sporadic lethargy & coffee cravings even at 75 hours.

Unlike Winter, I have a sweet tooth even on a good day, and it is in turbo mode right now. :grimacing:

I’ve been tempted to give up several times.

I may end up doing decaf much earlier than planned, to help ease through the transition.

Seeing varied testimonials. Some people’s most miserable hump was 3 days, some 7 days, some 2-3 weeks, and some a whole month.

Not thrilled to think about feeling like shit for potentially 30 days.

Damn, you are grumpy on a good day.
I can’t imagine you at day 3-4!!
(just effing with you)

Definitely avoiding coworkers to the max extent possible this week!

I grew up drinking Vernor’s, which was then bottled in Detroit. Today, it’s hard to find.

I did that several years ago. It wasn’t as hard as I Thought it would be. I will sometimes have one at lunch instead of a beer, but I don’t have any around the house.

I know I drink too much coffee though. the “cup” size on a coffee maker is about 6 ounces. But 99% of the “cups” that people use for coffee are at least 12 oz. But I can’t have caffeine after noon or I’ll be up all night. Because I have two "cups"in he morning, when we ride for coffee, I will either not have any or I will get a flavored mineral water.
