How to get rid of a car

As I have posted before I received a safety recall for my BMW in October. After nine months they still don’t know when a remedy will be available for it

Does anyone know how I can find a company that will buy it for parts. I don’t care what I can get for it. I just want to get rid of it because I am tired of paying insurance and personal property taxes for a car that is not safe to drive and taking up space in my garage

BTW - this is my third BMW and I will never buy another BMW again. I think it is disgusting that they don’t have a program to take back cars when nine months after a safety recall they have no idea when one will be available.

Id recommend carmax or carvana, you can get a value online with your vin. Unless you misrepresent the car (has body damage or more miles than you said) youll get the price they promised upon pickup or dropoff. Myself and girlfriend have sold a few cars this way and there is no better low hassle way to get rid of a car.

How big a safety problem is this causing? Is the car not safe to drive?

Nine months is a long time, but I wouldn’t necessarily assume that because the word safety is in the recall notice that you can’t drive it.

@mcarley -the safety recall is for engine bolts that can come loose so the car will stall and won’t be able to be restarted. This can cause an accident.

I have been driving the car once a week in my immediate area to keep the battery alive. However, I won’t take the risk of going more than a few blocks from my house where it could be very dangerous if the car stalled and I couldn’t restart it.

The dealer told me that if they bought it from me that they wouldn’t be allowed to sell it with this safety recall

Then yeah, nine months is a long time to wait.

But if this is it, it looks like maybe they have a fix ready. Letters went out last week.

@mcarley - Thanks! Yes, that is the recall for my car. When I called BMW yesterday they told me that they finally figured out the fix but the remedy for my vin number is not available yet, The BMW dealer also told me that they are coming out very slowly because of problems with their supply chain and that he couldn’t predict when the remedy would be available for my car

You can call the claims department of your insurance company that covers the car and ask for a list of their salvage bidders.

@Rasputin - Thanks for the good suggestion!

I second the carmax or carvana suggestion. They will run the vin before they make an offer so it’s not like your hiding anything. The recall will show up when they run the vin assuming they use carfax or something similar.

Also ask if there is a salvage auction facility available.

Fascinating. You could also give it to charity.

It only took me one BMW to never buy another. It was a 2002, purchased new in 1972. Dealers could not fix it so I sold it and bought a new ride. It was fun going by my BMW dealer and showing my sales guy my new truck: A 1977 GMC Sierra Classic! Standard cab, long bed, 454 engine.
