How much is your bitcoin worth if you don't use an online backup

Apparently not much

Sounds like he lost faith in 2013 and tossed it. Or accidentally did so.

Either way, fools and their money are soon parted.

Case in point, putting on public record that he’s searching for $750 mil. If he ever found it, every armed gangster miscreant would be targeting his house.

Can’t win. Needs to accept that he blew it.

Now he is appealing to Trump. What Trump can do in Wales, I’m not sure. But even if they are allowed to find a hard drive that has been in a landfill for over a decade, and they DO find it, are you willing to pay the guy half a billion dollars to get his “bitcoin” off it?

Yeah, this guy isn’t smart at all. There’s a lot of dumb people in the world, and he’s one of them.

Is that your point, or are you implying something else?

Not implying anything, just taht if I had anything worth half a billion dollars, the LAST place I would want to keep it is on the hard drive of a laptop. Even my daughters old beanie babies are in a locked box to be safe until we decide to convert them to cash.

The thing about Bitcoin is that it was never actually on his drive. That’s simply where the information is stored to let him access it.

It’s fine to store that info on a thumb drive, but it should be backed up in at least a couple safe places, and should be appropriately disguised…not labeled “Bitcoin keys” or something obvious like that.

It also wasn’t worth billions at the time, the billions is today’s value.

If I had something worth $10,000 the last place I’d want it is on the laptop hard drive.

They is virtually zero chance that the hard drive will be recoverable if found. It has been buried in landfill for a decade or so. The trash truck crushes and compresses the garbage into the truck. Then once at the landfill, a giant compactor is rolled over the garbage again. If it didn’t get crushed, it is likely completely ruined by water and other liquids from the garbage.
