Harvard will be free for most who qualify academically

I applaud this.

With the size of their endowment, this makes sense.

I could have missed this in the article, but does this apply only to undergrad ?

appears so

“The new plan will enable about 86% of U.S. families to qualify for Harvard financial aid and expand the Ivy League college’s commitment to providing all undergrads the resources they need to enroll and graduate, according to Garber”

In Illinois if your family makes under around $70k a year you get free tuition at any state school. Unfortunately we didn’t qualify so I coughed up over $100,000 over 4 years. IMO they shouldn’t look at parents income, just the student.

Well, at 18 most students don’t make squat, and those that do probably work more hours because their families need more money.

Yes, but the parents aren’t going to college, the kid is. Some parents may be able to pay but choose not to and others might have a fucked up home life and leave at 18.

So are you saying college should be free?
Because no 18 year old can afford it without parental assistance.

No, but they should level the paying field (see what I did there) so costs go down for all students. Paying by how much the parents make doesn’t make sense.

I can think of no better way to measure socioeconomic status.

It’s not just about socioeconomic status. If a kid is very smart but his rich parents don’t want to foot the bill he’s screwed or is forced to take out huge student loans.

There are plenty of academic scholarships available

Not all academic scholarships are merit based…

That is from 6 years ago.
If I remember right, Harvard lost a lawsuit so they can’t use race as a variable anymore

time will tell

The policy in the link is a huge step in the right direction.

For us, that’s how it’ll work but it’s unusual

There are a few categories of independent status

My brother went to MIT relatively cheaply too

No the parental income is socialized education.

If it’s based on the kids income and students are disqualified from student loans because they can discharged in bankruptcy, the cost of college will plummet as many schools will need to file bankruptcy and sell off many of their assets

The cost of college is because of the federal student loan program which you have to pay back and grants that you don’t need to pay back (directly).

I did. I forked over $33,000 my mom $5,000

Actually it’s the grants and student loan program that makes colleges less accessible to more people

You had $33,000 as an 18 year old?
