FanDuel Sports

Looks like this network will shutdown this spring. They missed their February payments to teams carried by them. They currently broadcast 9 MLB, 13 NBA and 7 NHL teams. Many of these teams haven’t announced their future plans.

Sports networks are a mess, I don’t understand how many of them make money. Unless you have a subscription to certain cable television companies in Chicago there is no way to watch the Cubs on TV. And you can’t just download the Marquee sports network app and pay a monthly fee, you have to have a cable subscription.

Actually I just checked, it looks like you can now download the app and pay 20 bucks a month for the Marquee sports Network.

Fan Duel charges $110/season for the sport or $20/month through Prime. I subscribe to NHL Center Ice ($70/season). It’s only available via cable or satellite TV. They carry all the local broadcasts of games except the 12-15 that ESPN+ preempts or games in your local market. Apparently, I am in the Colorado and Utah NHL markets, despite Denver being 450 miles and Salt Lake being 600 miles away.

Hopefully this will help me get Royals and Blues games back so I can watch them regularly.

I went to St. Louis back in the mid '90s for a couple Blackhawk-Blues games, pretty rowdy games.

I thought FanDuel was sports gambling.

It is, and to be fair, they do that well.
But they bought the rights to FOX Sports local affiliates (or maybe from a third party that already bought them) thinking they could also run that. They failed miserably.

I think widespread sports gambling will be the end of sports at the pro and college level. And while I’m not a conspiracy theorist, I saw some VERY questionable calls and non calls that didn’t involve the Chiefs (that many seem to fell had the refs in their pocket) in the NFL games this year. And money does a funny thing to people.

They advertise their betting business almost continuously through the broadcast, in the crawl, in a split screen and regular ads. They even have the play by play and color guys giving all sorts of odds during the game, as well as the game analyst during breaks between periods. I will not miss that at all.

That is probably the dumbest business model I have ever heard of. Why sell half of your revenue to yourself?
