Facebook Groups

Does anyone else think that some of the Facebook Group administrators have such an inflated concept of their power that it is almost more humorous than annoying?

I know next to nothing about Facebook, but I’m glad to see you haven’t floated out to sea.

Yep, some do. Some groups are very well managed. In some, the admins get power hungry and turn it into a no fun zone.

To be fair, it’s a thankless job. The bigger a group gets, the more scammers and spammers come, and even the real members can be a pain in the ass. I haven’t tried admin-ing, but it’s a lot of work.

My only experience with a moderator was when a tire blew up on my RV. Thing is, it was a spare. It blew up being exposed to the sun, no pressure from the road. I posted the pic in a RV group complaining about ‘china bombs’ (tires made in china) and i was chastised for starting a thread that wasnt inclusive of asian RVers. Is that a thing?

Moderating any online group is a thankless job. I remember joining a popular chat forum back in 2002 and at first I didn’t understand why the mods were so touchy.

I realized over the course of a few years that they were constantly dealing with trolls and other assholes that routinely attempted to disrupt the peace.

The moderators were mostly young adults in late teens & early 20s (i.e. kids). They weren’t the most serene & secure people in the universe, but I can appreciate the difficulty & thanklessness of what they were trying to do.

I belong to a group that follows amateur wrestling.
The moderators only make sure there is basically no porn.
You actually can get kicked off the forum if you complain to the moderators without addressing the problem with the other person first.

It is actually a very fun group!

Definitely my kind of authorities. Discourage people from being whiney little tattling shits.

Most groups where everyone has a common interest are, but you always get a jerk or two taking life too seriously. A local food critic group is for people to rate their experience at local restaurants or looking for restaurant recommendations, there are a couple members that always criticize other members like or dislike of a place. It gets annoying.

Not so much with the big all of Facebook groups, but more so with the local and neighborhood groups. In the big BBQ groups I follow (tens of thousands of members) I’ve never seen a problem. With the local groups some moderators have an agenda or are on a power trip. There were a couple groups that members got fed up and started their own group, which butt hurt the mods in the groups they left. It was funny but kind of sad at the same time. Adults acting like children.

My bike group has a page but it’s very laid back. IT’s usually used to announce or plan rides. They will add just about anybody. We actually have a lot of Canadians because our group names are similar - our group is Riff Raff and theirs is Old Stock Riff Raff. Sometimes a person will get added and then start trying to sell crap. Not like someone trying to sell their bike, but bike related stuff where they are clearly a business. Those are quietly removed. And while the majority of the people in my group are liberal, they ask that we keep politics off the group board since not all of us are and we don’t want politics to alienate friendships or potential friendships.
