Dysphasia vs GERD / LPR

I just started seeing a speech pathologist for pragmatics as many of you can attest to my poor social skills but also recently developed an aspiration from two weeks ago which most likely was GERD.

Don’t know if it’s been an ongoing swallowing issue from acid reflux or if it’s related to long COVID, an acute issue, or from my early developmental period.

Wondering if any of you know about acid reflux GERD and dysphasia.

I’ve had GERD for years. I used to take Nexium but my doctor switched me to 40 mg of Omeprozole. Of all the meds I take this is the one I’ll notice if I forget to take it. I had reflux and ‘indigestion’ that felt like chest pains of a heart attack.

Thanks for letting me know. For me it felt like I had something stuck and interfered with my sleep for the last couple weeks but especially Tuesday and Wednesday night where I slept less than 4 hours total. I was definitely a basket case.

I’m being asked to have both a FEES and a MBSS. I had a flexible scope exam in 2016 so I shared that with my speech language pathologist working on dysphagia. Thinking of going back to ENT to see if this is the right course of action treatment wise

Not sure if this is just better handled by GI even if there are oral motor issues too. That said, these are routine tests so I don’t know why I’m anxious

Because of my various pragmatic issues, I’m also working on that too: verbosity and language

They had chocolate cupcakes at work. Since I wanted to see if I could have a small amount I took only 1/8 of the cupcake and my mouth burned despite having no prior reflux in 24 hours. I wonder if they might have been stale

I wonder if this would be an oral allergy or is more like GERD assuming that if I had it again with a similar reaction. I had a different reaction 3 weeks ago when I woke up with a Langroyspasm after eating chocolate caramel six hours earlier

Lots of overlap there. You may want to talk to an ENT as well.

Have they looked for a hernia?

Yes definitely. Deciding which tests might be best decided by an ENT since the GI has an upper endoscopy, the ENT has their scope to check in the nose and the speech pathologist uses the same tools as the ENT but wants to see how those organs work.

Can a hernia cause motor issues?

In Maryland, nurses don’t need any oversight by MDs so SLPs can do swallow studies without the oversight of an ENT or a psych nurse can have their own practice with no oversight

Are you talking about difficulty swallowing? Yes. A hiatal hernia can cause a plethora of problems.
