Do we REALLY want America to be like Florida?

It seems to keep happening, apparently the positives outweigh the negatives.

My brother’s wife took a job in Miami 12-15 years ago and bought a condo in the Coconut Grove neighborhood, my brother thought he’d hate Florida but ended up loving it. They also have a house just outside Charleston South Carolina (Isle of Palms) a block from the beach that he never thought he’d live in full time but loves it there too.

I was talking to my cousin last night, who has lived in Florida for decades.
She said if I visit to avoid Miami and instead go to Homestead to do anything.

They have a car but pretty much walk everywhere, there are bars, restaurants, shops, grocery stores and pretty much everything they need within walking distance. There is a lot going on right in their neighborhood.

Every place is different, even within Florida. 'Cept when you pass thru a sea of dwellings that all look just the same and are all made of ticky tacky.

I ran away to Texas for 46 years and was not sure I could survive the humidity. But lo and behold we have air conditioning now! Opportunity arose to return 5 years ago and it seems OK. Then I got an Alaska Bride who had never been to FL and she loves it! Doesn’t hurt that the place I bought was an Old Garden and she keeps finding new flowers. Nor was my log house a problem because that is what she raised her kids in, in Alaska.

One of the really strong points about FL is the robust medical infrastructure, due to a large population of old goats. When you get old you don’t want to have to look too hard to find medical care.

Dont look now…but the cost of living is up everywhere.

Florida is becoming too expensive for many old goats and they are shifting to the redneck riviera in Alabama.

Still, when I retired I contemplated moving there…not in Orlando buy something smaller, like Ormand Beach. Then I saw that it’s the deadliest state for cyclists, which is what I spend the bulk of my time doing, so Kansas seemed like the best place for me.

I will take our earthquakes over tornados and hurricanes any day. Or heck, even that hailstorm my gf got caught in a couple of weeks ago.

That’s true, but I think that my grandads house today costs more than he made in his entire career. My brother found the last house we lived it…dad sold in in 1973 for $60,000 and that included the 2.5 acres is sat on. Today, it’s $620,000. IF it had increased at the inflation rate, it would be $410,000. While some of that may be due to the land, there must be something in place to prevent them from subdividing the lots as all of the homes that were there have not been broken up.

IMO, the Midwest is the worst weather.
Yet I have lived here most of my life.

They can keep today’s weather…ugh

I can’t imagine riding in this.

My daughter’s family lived in Florida for four years and even though they had a beautiful house with good schools, she didn’t like living in Florida. On the other hand, they love living in Atlanta.

Why? What were the differences?

Having grown up in central Florida - once you get about a mile from the coast, it’s pretty ugly. And you lose out on the sea breeze. Atlanta can get hot, but at least the scenery is more than pine trees and plametto.

Im not BMs daughter but Atlanta is a big improvement over Florida. Biggest reason is the weather. Ive always been a mountain guy over beach, I find GA just nicer and slower paced than Florida.

Personally, Florida is a nice place to visit. Would not want to live there. Need the 4 seasons.

My dad was from Virginia and my mom from Ohio. All the kids were born and raised in Florida, but they would take us out of school in October to North Carolina and Virginia so that we could see that trees really did change color.l
