Good idea or not?
There are toll roads all over in Houston. When my mom was there at MD Anderson, my dad racked up $800 in tolls in 2 months. I was down there driving around and there was one toll road that was $8 for about 8 miles. The free option was bumper to bumper 6 lane traffic.
I was in Dallas for a friends wedding last year and there were a lot of toll roads there, but I was relieved to finally find one. I donât think I could ever live in Dallas again, and these days the suburbs of Dallas seem to stretch to the Oklahoma border. I know when I crossed the state line, traffic on the âfreewayâ was running about 80 and I had some clown in a pickup riding my ass and flashing his lights for me to move over. Problem was, there wasnât anywhere to move - I was following the guy in front of me way closer than I am comfortable with (about 30 feet at 80). When I saw a toll road that would get me whre I was going I wasted no time going into it. Traffic was still driving at a maniac rate, but there werenât nearly as many people driving on it.
AS for NYC - Given the responses in the article - eliminate the fee structure and let them bitch.
I pay around $80 a month using the Illinois Tollway, mostly my work commute. We go to Madison around once a month and the same interstate (90) has no tolls in Wisconsin, plus the gas tax is lower and they have no problem keeping the interstate in good condition.
I use to pay that. The OK turnpike recently went to the plate pay system. The idiot governor basically declared war on the Indian tribes. I have Indian plates on my vehicles from my wifeâs Indian tribe. The tags are cheaper and the excise tax is only 1.5% vs 4.5% at the state. Well turns out most tribes do not share their tag info with the state or feds. So on the plate pay system, the state has no clue where to send the bill. So no tolls for me anymore.
They went to the plate pay to âsave moneyâ and get rid of all the toll booths. What ended up happening is they realized that about 25% of the state vehicles are Indian tags and they have no place to send the bills.
About 12 years ago, I was in the DC area with wifeâs car. We go pulled over because the police plate scanner did not turn up a registration. It was the first time those local cops in DC area have seen a Indian plate. Good thing we had our registration papers in the glove box.
Its worked in London. Cut traffic in the city way down.
Thatâs what the goal is, but here in Murricah, we are very car centric so people donât want to pay it. Gas is a lot cheaper here. IT might go over better if we went to metric system and started selling gas like they do in Europe - $2 per liter. or about $8 per gallon.
Yep, you knew it was comingâŚ
Lefties would cry higher gas prices hurts the poor and people of color the most, plus companies would just pass the higher costs on to the customer like with evil tariffs.
In light of the fact that there are so many people who are afraid to take the subways this congestion tax will be very bad for the economy of the city.
Good point. Maybe they could use the increased revenue to protect riders better.
My kid will take the the train into Chicago to visit his buddies, itâs less than an hour drive from our house but thereâs no parking where he goes. I think the train ride is $8.
The city will be just fine. But they do need to tamp down the subway violence.
This is a perfect example of using âtaxesâ to alter behavior instead of creating revenue.
Which is 100% what a government should not do.
I understand paying for something like a tollway that has to be built and maintained, but agree this is trying to alter behavior.
I thought the mayor said that the subway was safe??? Didnât she have a press conference telling people that the subway was safe again? During that press conference a woman was set on fire on the subway by an illegal?
Think that was meant for imabass.
You can say the subways are safe and still double security in the the subways. Nobody wants to hear your mayor say âYeahâŚif you ride the subway there is a decent chance youâll be set on fire or pushed onto the tracksâ.
It would be a great idea if they offset the new tolls with the reduction in taxes.
But greedy, corrupt, left wing New York only wants more and more money, always.
