Have you noticed what’s going on in the S Pacific regarding deep-sea mining lately? The folks in the Cook Islands are all excited about it, and not in a good way.
The Cook Islands has suffered in the past from overfishing by foreign fishing interests. They are concerned about the deep-sea mining of mineral nodules from the sea floor, which scours the bottom and leaves nothing in its wake, and its affect on marine life.
The Cook Islands consist of a land area of just 93 sq miles, but a seabed area of over 750,000 sq miles. Much of the wealth and wellbeing of the country comes from that sea area within it’s borders.
