Bar Codes Becoming Invisable

Walmart lets the barcode disappear

It is a anti shoplifting procedure. This will prevent bar code swapping.

I have not heard of this before.

This will probably be deemed racist…

Looks interesting. Barcodes are great at what they do and have been around for over 50 years, but new technology is needed.

Sometimes using a self checkout, I think this will be tough. Usually I can find it but sometimes it is WTF is it! Make it invisible and we are in a heap 'o trouble.

The improvement that I would expect would be on the reader side. Read it no matter what you did, and more importantly don’t ring it twice!

How do you like self checkout?

I’m not a fan at all. Walmart essentially went down to like 2 manned checker stations a couple years ago in an obvious attempt to divert everyone to self checkout.

I can work it ok, but when there is an error or an adult purchase involved such as alcohol, it is annoying to wait on the attendant.

I also notice many (if not most) other customers take FOREVER to get through. It only reinforces my desire never to see “universal health care” in America, as I imagine people would treat their medical visits in the same way – taking their sweet ass time, not concerned about the people waiting behind them.

I understand that the invisible bar code will be all over the product so it doesn’t make any difference which side you plant to to the bar code reader.

I hate it. I should get a discount for self checkout

Back when I was a cashier, I had to take the groceries out of the basket, key punch in the price and the department it came from. I dislike self checkouts, and I’d be one of those people that hold up the line looking for a bar code. :woman_shrugging:

Which reminds me, store employees have a much better bead on how to handle things like missing bar codes – they know a lot of the four-digit produce codes by heart from their experience.

Self checkout is like turning a customer into a first-day employee every time they check out. :-1:

Aldi’s has bar codes on multiple sides of the item to be scanned.

Speeds up the process, whether doing self check out or when a cashier is checking out your items.
