Kansas just had a law go into effect about licese plate frames that cover parts of the license plate. It is punishable by a fine of up to $2500. I get it…it’s really just a way to give cops “cause” for pulling over a car that may be a drug smuggling suspect, but I do kind of get it. I see tons of cars around here that have the state name obscured on the license plate, and I’ve always wondered about that. But just to avoid a potential fine, I’ll take the dealerships nameplate off teh back of mine - just to be safe.
They do it to avoid automatic tickets, and they think it will stop the identification of the plate.
I don’t think many use that reasoning. I think that many are just proud of their college or sports team as these often cover the state…epecisally Missouri, which for some reason puts the state name like Missouri
compared to Kansas
Yeah, this is about obscuring the plates. But when I joined a Tesla FB group, I was surprised how many people care a lot about how their cars look. Wraps that cost over a grand.
In CA, the law requires both front and back plates, but a lot of people skip the front ones because they don’t how it looks. I don’t care enough to chance it.
I will say, I’m bothered by the increasing number of people with illegally tinted windows. Whether I’m driving or being a pedestrian, I feel safer if I can make eye contact with another driver.
Ya, my wife rides without a front plate too, but we keep it in the glove box just in case.
Many cars don’t have an easy way to put on a front plate. I mean with my tesla you tape it on.
As a cyclist - I hate them as well…you HAVE to have eye contact to know that they have seen you. If I were a law enforcement officer, I’d have my gun ready approaching the car. I think it’s gotten popular as the laws about being on the phone while driving have increased - if they can’t see you, you are free to text and drive to your hearts content.
This is why I wholeheartedly look forward to the day when all vehicles are FSD.
Even if it takes a hundred years (and it well might with the way these fucking state governments move), it will be a good thing.
Distracted drivers are not going anywhere, and traffic cops nationwide are laughably insufficient/absent. Our only salvation is in technology.
First thing I do when I drive home in a new car is take the dealership license plate holder off. I once asked if they intended to pay me for the advertising and the question got an unfavorable response. I have a plain thin chrome plate holder that doesn’t cover anything important. I think it’s on its third car.
NM only requires a rear plate
What annoys the shit out of me is the decals they put on the paint. I typically ask them to remove it, but last time I was so tired of the grind that I didn’t remember it until later.
One day I’ll do it myself. Definitely no sense in advertising their dealership for free.
I don’t see as much as I used to. I did tell once tell a salesman that I would refuse delivery and kill the deal if they put a decal or one of those plastic fake chrome dealer name sticker on the car. They did not.
You sound like my dad, but this was back in the days before they put advertising on a license plate frame, but put their name on the trunk lid. And he did that while he was negotiating the price of the car - he asked them how much per month they would be paying him to advertise. He passed in 2001 but he never took delivery of a car with a dealer name on the trunk.
