He had a yard or two extra on that
Stellar. Like a hole in 1 in golf.
Do preseason games count for the record?
Nope
And no way in hell they ever should.

Why not?
It was an awesome field goal!

Preseason games have different conditions.
Why not?
For the same reason no other statistics from that game should count either: the game is an exhibition game that doesn’t count.
Not to take away from what the kicker did, since it was a pre-season game, the opposing team probably did not put 100% effort in trying to block the kick.
It reminds of the 1970 Lions-Saints game where Tom Dempsey kicked the then record 63 yard FG. The Lions defense just sort of half heartedly rushed and, with virtually no time left on the clock, they lost the game 19-17.

Why would they do that with the game on the line?
Hubris, ego, etc. The D-line, led by Alex Karras, was shocked when the kick made it. Afterwards, no one wanted to talk about it.
Edit: I should have mentioned that Dempsey was a straight on kicker, when former soccer players were new, and he had no right foot. He wore something resembling a shoe with a flat front. Also, the goal posts were on the goal line then.

That would not have affected the length of the kick.
That’s true, but it might have affected the decision to kick.
