100 Best Guitar Solos

Rolling Stone has issued another one of their lists. There are always issues with the inclusions and exclusions with their lists, this one is no different. But here it is. I find these 3 picks interesting.

#90, East-West by the Butterfield Blues Band. The guitarists is Mike Bloomfield, generally believed to be one of the best blues rock guitarists, sometimes with a ‘but only.’ He was active from about 1965-1972 and sporatically thereafter. But, he was also a heavily addicted soul who died while parked in his car in 1980.

#30, That Lady by the Isley Brothers. The song was first done by the Isleys in 1964 as a straight, vocal based R&B number. Not sure, but Jimi Hendrix might have done the session work on that version. They issued a remake in 1973, when Ernie Isley took the song to another level and turned over half of it a guitar solo.

#15, While my Guitar Gently Sleeps by Tom Petty, Jeff Lynne and others at the 2004 Rock Hall of Fame induction of George Harrison. About half way through the number, Prince strolls out and takes over carrying the lead for the rest of song. It was a remarkable performance. Not sure if his entry was planned, but Petty and Lynne seemed to like it. That whole concert pops up on MTV LIve or one of the streamers from time to time. The Beatles version is #10, due to Harrison’s guitar work.

Enjoy.

That Prince performance was epic.

No Maybelle Carter, no Chet Atkins. Hendrix made the list 3X, but would have thought his Star Spangled Banner would have been on it.
