I’m pretty sure that’s true…back when the Susan B came out about the only “anti fraud” technology in vending machines was a magnet to stop someone from putting a slug in the machine…and most Coke’s were less than a dollar back then. No coins are magnetic and the Susan B was so close in size people could think they were putting 50 cents in the machine for a Coke when they actually paid $2

That reporter was Morley Safer, not Andy Rooney.
Damn got the wrong link…thanks.
Correct link.
Do you remember the 1/2 cent? What about the 2 & 3 cent? Imagine a time when 1/2 cent was a material enough value to justify minting coins.
I always liked Andy Rooney! I’m biased, my name is Andy also!
Nope, because those were eliminated 150 years ago. I had to look those up.
I agree. Have a quarter in my car to use if I go to Aldi"s. Few months ago, someone left their cart near the cart coral but not attatched to the others.
I attached it to the others. Now I have 2 quarters in my car. This is the only coins that I have.
I recently relearned the value of quarters after using a commercial laundromat while my household machine was broken.
We keep a roll of quarters in the car when we travel for that same reason Using a hotel laundry allows us to pack less
I need to start doing this. I hate overpacking.
Been a couple of years since I had to do that, but man that is a pain.
I don’t have to worry much about that.
Thongs and speedos don’t take up much room.
Someone told me years ago the secret to a great vacation is take twice as much money and half as many clothes.
Watched a couple videos from this guy on YouTube who travels worldwide with just a carry on, he has like two pairs of pants, two pairs of shorts, 4 shirts, 3 pairs of socks and underwear. My son flew Frontier Airlines a few times because it was so cheap and he jammed everything into a little backpack that wasn’t even a carry on size.
That’s catchy, and very sensible ![]()
Normally I am the “lets just spend the money” person in our family and my wife is the sensible one.
For some reason when we are on vacation I ask “how much will this cost”, and my wife is the “shut the hell up, we are on vacation” person.
That’s funny. We go in knowing what we’re going to spend and usually error on the high side. Nothing wrong with a budget vacation but if you have the money, spend it. When my kid first got his job he would take a weekend trip to Denver on Frontier Airlines, round trip was like $110. He’d crash on his buddy’s couch and probably spend 200 bucks including the airfare for the whole weekend.
I keep quarters in my car to use in those self serve car washes. They are up to 4+ bucks now to have enough time to use wash mode and then use rinse mode to finish my car.
I have a “change jar” with everything except quarters in it. I have a second jar of quarters. Not all that long ago, when I actually carried cash, I could accumulate enough change to pay for nice chunk of a vacation. I used to come home every day, toss the change in the jar and forget about it. When it go close to being full I’d take it to the bank to have them count it. So far this year I think I’ve added coins maybe 5 times.
I only know because I collected coins as a kid. I have these old coins in my collection.
