To understand this, the Missouri Supreme Court just struck down the gerrymandered congressional districts (it is a lot more complicated than that).

Not sure where this gerrymandering race will end up, but it won’t be good.
The Missouri GOP in general, and the Secretary of State specifically royally fucked up this years election.
Like I said, the details are convoluted, too much to try to explain on a message board.
I agree because I doubt that state legislatures will willingly give up their power to redistrict. I also think there is little to no hope that federal involvement will ever be allowed (absent a civil rights issue).

That is the problem here, but the voters petitioned for the right, and the Supreme Court sided with the petitioners.
I saw a quick summary that basically said that they can’t use it this year, but can put it on the ballot for next time. And it was only supposed to net Rs one additional seat, so the difference won’t be huge.
About half the states do not have a referendum/initiative process. Missouri does, but NM severely limits that process and only our state legislature can put a constitutional amendment on the ballot.
In some states, it was out of the legislature’s hands. CA had a nonpartisan commission, but the ballot measure overrode that to temporarily implement partisan redistricting. I don’t see that changing soon.
IMHO, SCOTUS fucked this up by saying that partisan redistricting wasn’t in their purview. Should be a 14A violation.
The POS GOP in Missouri tried to do that last month and failed miserably.
We’ve lived here 27 years and, I think, for 23 of those years the state House had had a Dem majority. The state Senate has had a Dem majority for about 90 years. They are not going to give up power easily.
