Or did he simply say it should be voluntary and not mandated by the government?
I used to think of you as one of the more thoughtful & intelligent posters. But seeing you strawman somebody’s argument is quite disappointing.
There are more ways to be an asshole than simply using foul language & personal insults. Misrepresenting someone’s statements is a pretty stark form of disrespect.
To clarify, both here and on the CHB Bears has criticized unions, how they make waste in companies, how they negotiate deals that are not sustainable long-term for the company, and the like. At the same time, he has benefitted from working at an employer with a union. I just find the contradiction amusing. Thus, my analogy about the waiter criticizing tipping.
We’re not talking unions, we’re talking about companies matching 401k contributions and the government mandating contributions. I have no problem with companies choosing to match, I don’t think the government should mandate it.
And YOU get a match…but feel that others just save like you did without that help. I only point out that you had a shitload (hundreds of thousands) of your employers dollars in your savings that others wouldn’t have, and you won’t even touch that until you have to because of the pension you got (but likely wouldn’t were it not for the union you despise). Because the company on it’s own isn’t benevolent enough to offer it without it being a union demand. I have a pension and I know that’s a rarity. I wish other had one, but you seem to feel that the 401K was better. YOu had plenty of opportunity to escape the shackles of a union job and take a job that only offered a 401K. You are going to do better than most in retirement because you already HAVE more than most in retirement have or will have.
Millions of people get the match, if I didn’t have the match I’d still contribute to my own retirement, plus my match is something like 50% of 4% of my salary. If I wasn’t getting the match I’d contribute a couple thousand more a year because I’m the one responsible for my retirement.
How do you explain the millions of nonunion employees that get the match?
