IN the case of Kansas City MO, the drive is as little as 1 mile. Indeed, there is Grocery Store by me that is on a street named “State Line Road”. There are several grocery stores along that road on the Kansas side of the Street. That’s why I say that relying on a sales tax when your two largest cities border another state isn’t the smartest move you could make.
I guess on the eastern side of the state it’s mostly slums on the Illinois side, but on the Western side of the state it is much more “upscale”. And aside from groceries, there is a large, historic, upscale shopping district on the MIssouri side, and if sales taxes are raised, there is an equally upscale shopping area (several of them actually) just down the road in Kansas, from 1 to 10 miles away. Just losing the KC revenue could hurt the state.
