The representative of the people is the administration. My union would negotiate with SecTrans who is appointed by the president. Elections determine who negotiates on behalf of taxpayers.
Can she claim benefits at 62? I imagine she can claim off your history.
Probably the biggest scam for SS is that a spouse or former spouse can use her husbands history for SS benefits. My ex never made more than 30k amd that was decades ago, when she’s 62 she can use my history for benefits. I don’t know if she knows that but imagine her new husband is savvy enough to know that. Good thing is it won’t come out of my SS.
I didn’t pay into SS at my last job with the pension either. However I had a history of paying into it before I got that job. So, I was eligible for a small amount, I think $800. But Reagans laws in the 80’s said anyone getting a government pension they hold back half and then something else about a windfall, I only get $300 a month from SS, but doesn’t bother me because I have a good pension.
I also got a letter from SS saying I was eligible as a widow (although we had been divorced 25 years, but I never remarried) to draw $2,695 a month from my former deceased husbands account. That was the first paragraph. The second paragraph said, but because my government pension was more than that amount I was not eligible for it.
Taking it at 62 took a chunk too.
So my government pension I worked for is saving you all complainers money.
I am not 100% sure of this, but I think my mother in law had a choice between collecting her SS or RR retirement on father in laws account, and it was better to collect from his.
My dad retired from the post office and received no s/s from that. He had second jobs for many years and qualified for s/s from them for, I think, the minimum amount for the number of years he contributed.
