My wife happened to play Slim Harpo, Muddy Waters and Siegel-Schwall cds in the same block, and this song was on each. As it happens, we have another couple of versions. So, our rainy day in a song.

Slim Harpo (who wrote it) -1957

Muddy Waters, 1980 (after hearing this, Jagger is reputed to have said why listen to our version when you can listen to Muddy Waters)

Not heard that one, but it’s excellent. I like the slide. Have to look into them.

They’re a fun group, do a mix of stuff. Old English ballads, occasional funny songs.

Speaking of funny songs;

Saw the songwriter of this song sing it in Nashville and he has some other funny stuff. And some really good songs too.

Aaron Raitiere is the songwriter

Jim Hightower wrote a book entitled “There’s nothing in the middle of the road but yellow stripes and dead armadillos.”

Having now listened to these, I agree with Jagger. Muddy is the best.

I had never heard the original.

Warren Smith, one of the early rockabilly Sun artists, came out with a version right after after Slim Harpo. Some folks think he wrote it, but he didn’t. Smith also quickly covered Harpo’s I’ve Got Love if You Want It, as did many others.

This web site purports to trace back to the original recording of very many songs. I shopped in the site developer’s record store in East Lansing, Michigan a few decades ago (still owned and run by his former partner). As fate would have, Rosemont now lives in Santa Fe and runs a record store there.

“Original” isn’t a simple word to define. There are lots of songs credited to AP Carter, for example, though he was more of a song collecter than a writer.
