The Treasury Dept began issuing a new series of iBonds on Nov 1, with a base interest rate of 5.5%. The rate is adjusted every 6 Months depending on the rate of inflation. The max purchase is $10,000 per person. The interest accrues in your Treasury account and is not taxable until you cash the bonds out. Interest is also not subject to state or local income tax. We bought some of these before the high inflation rates paid out in 2022.

We have $10,000 face value of I bonds we bought in 2000 or 2001 that has a fixed rate of 3%, we’re holding those until they stop earning interest. In 2022 or 2023 with the adjustable rate they were paying close to 12%. My kid still has around $17,000 face value of I-bonds from when he was young, bought from 2000 to 2006. I checked a few years ago and they’re worth over $40,000, he’ll probably use that for a down payment when he’s ready to buy a home.
