In California where we had an extensive amount of trails and bike lanes. This was never an issue for me.

Depends on the city. Some cities in CA have great bike lanes. Mine has few.

More power to you if you ride them on the road. With SUV’s and pickups being so popular, it makes it harder to be seen. And i think that one of those would result in a similar accident if you hit an expansion joint at just the right (or wrong) way.

Depends on the recumbent. On my Highracer, my head is a high as on any upright bike, only my feet are out front for safety, not my head. My Raptobike Lowrader is very low, but it has a very colorful spinning flag placed high.

I was hit identically by vehicles (passenger side mirrors) on upright bike and recumbent. The injury was FAR less on the recumbent, with a shorter distance to fall and feet first.

We are lucky here. Very few people are assholes here, but there seems to be something about pickup trucks that brings out the worst in their drivers.

I agree. In cities it is pricks in BMWs, but in the outerlands it is rednecks in big trucks. One pulled up beside me and hit me in the head with a half-empty beer can. Those people are very agressive (and stupid.)
