Help me make a decision

My side by side Fridge is 6 years old. A few months ago, the fridge side wasn’t getting cold, and I had a professional tell me it was the damper and paid him little over $400 to install a new damper.

It worked well for a few months, now the fridge side is freezing everything. I’ve spent days on Utube and have cleaned the coils, put food grade silicone on the door gaskets, used a hair dryer on them too, turned down the Temp, turned off the icemaker, made sure it was far enough from the wall for ventilation, etc.

Should I call another repairman who will tell me it needs a damper I just had replaced and put more money into it, or just buy a new fridge?

From a purely financial pov, a new fridge.

Thank you :slightly_smiling_face:

Is there a warranty on the first repair? Even if not, I would call the same repair shop and tell them the problem you are having. They might do something..

Unfortunately I have to agree with this

Turn the temp up. It’s counterintuitive but turning it down causes the fridge to feeze which makes the temp warm.

Set it to 0 and 40

My advice is to stay away from those over computerized LG’s and Samsungs. And the stupid “french doors”. Most of my friends that have them have problems with them.

6 or 7 years ago I bought a plain Whirlpool, top fridge, bottom freezer with a simple ice maker. Nothing in the door. Does not hook to the internet. It just works. I fully expect it to last 15 to 20 years just like my previous. It was a contractor grade Hotpoint. It just worked.

And another thing. My new fridge and my old Hotpoint doors automatically close! Those fancy French doors? You have to push them closed! Going backward in my opinion.

We have a 22 year old Kenmore side by side refrigerator that still looks and works like brand new, even the ice maker. Other than vacuuming the condenser coils a couple times a year we haven’t done anything to it.

Can you give us the model number? I had the same issue on a 20 year old Frigidaire side by side. Replaced the thermostat and it has been fine 19 years.

We had a similar problem a while back and was because we packed stuff too tight in front of the vents that circulate the air in the fridge section.

Frigidaire model # LFSS2312TPO

There’s almost nothing in there right now, I haven’t bought groceries because of this issue. I have to keep leafy greens for my rabbit and it even freezes those.

I hear you, I like something simple, why the heck they put computers in Fridges is beyond me.

Turn the temp up. Make sure you don’t block vents.

Also keep the fridge mostly full. Since I live by myself. I put bottled water in to act as a buffer.

Not a long term solution, but what comes in handy is to have one of those mini refrigerators for emergencies. They don’t store much but can buy you some time.

Your model is a little different than mine as you have digital controls for temp where as mine has dials.

Watch this video and pay particular attention to diagnostic test #3 and #4. You can also run test #5 that will test the damper.

I am betting you have a bad thermistor(test #3 or #4) or the damper (test #5) has gone out again.

Thank you this is my exact fridge.

I took you guys advice, and jumped to Amazon and bought a mini fridge, got frustrated trying the diagnostic test, and called another repairman. He took out the damper the other repairman had installed and said it still had some of the packing paper on it and appeared to be cockeyed prohibiting the damper from closing. The good news is he only charged me a $100 service call fee. I’m in the wait and see if it works properly now. If not, I’m buying a new fridge.

I canceled the mini fridge order. I had accidently ordered one with a freezer on top and I don’t need a freezer.

There was a local appliance guy that would charge $100 to tell you what was wrong with something or $75 plus parts to fix it.
