December 24 humor

I have eaten quite a few Detroit Style Coney Dogs, in Detroit at the Lafayette and American Coney Island restaurants. Had a few pasties (pah-steez), quite tasty and popular in Michigan’s upper peninsula. Forced by wife’s relatives to try scrapple in PA, a forkful was more than sufficient. I suspect a lot of us have had Jello salad, not in Utah but it was a holiday staple in Michigan. Ate fried squirrel a few times in Kentucky (not WV). Ate a miniscule piece of a rocky mountain oyster in Colorado, and I couldn’t go any further with it.

Never had a green chile sundae here in NM, but we do have green chile cheese bagels for breakfast quite a bit.

Ive had 3 but not in the states theyre from. Ive had a Butter Burger in ND, Pasties in AZ, chipped beef in IL. I have had gator tail in FL.

Without googling, what is a pasty? If youve watched the british bake off, you know the answer.

I’ve had at least 8 on the map. Gravy bread is a Chicago thing, although I haven’t seen in on a menu is probably 20 years. It’s just a piece of Italian bread they use for a beef sandwich dipped in the gravy, which is just the au jus they cook the beef in. When I was a kid hot dog stands would sell it for 30 cents. Kind of just a snack or something when you’re broke, basically a meatless beef sandwich.

I like Detroit style pizza, the buttery crispy almost burnt crust is tasty.

In that case I’ve had gravy bread as well, at Portillos in Chicago. Italian Beef w/hot peppers dipped please!

I thought butter burger would be a WI thing and Detroit pizza a MI thing.

Edit: the burger is a WI thing.

Yes, Culver’s. Minnesota is the home and birth place of the Juicy Lucy burger, basically two thin patties with cheese in the middle. I saw that on DDD.

Cheese curds are another Wisconsin thing, along with having a brandy old fashioned before your Friday night fish fry at the local supper club or bar.

It is, but a few places in the Chicago area have opened in the last few years. It’s different but good, a nice change from the usual thin crust or deep dish.

Costco sells a Motor City pizza that is pretty good (parrot swears by them), although it is made in new Boston Mich, 20-25 miles southwest of Detroit.

It’s really good for frozen and a deal at two for $12.

I’ve had it, better than many pizza shops that say they make Detroit style.

What is interesting is that, at least when we lived there, there were only 2-3 local pizzerias that did that style. The predominant style then classic Italian due to the number of true Italian restaurants and pizza shops in the area. Also, both Little Caesar’s and Domino’s started in that Detroit area.

The irony.

In parts of Massachusetts, they make a style called “Bar room pizza”. Most people will get the Pizza with burnt edges. It is made this way by putting the sauce right to edge of the pan.

That seems impossible to me unless it was a 20 pitch at bat. Which it could’ve been.

I’ll be honest, I didn’t fact check before posting that, but after seeing your comment, I did and there are multiple accounts of it available online.

That is some baaaad luck!

I was listening to the Moth podcast earlier and a woman was describing having been the last one picked for every athletic event, etc. She was playing baseball and unexpectedly hit a solid double. She is on 2nd base waiting while the next batter pops one up and…instinctively, she reaches out and catches it. Oops.

Richie Ashburn was an exceptional centterfielder and pretty good hitter. Saw him play once, in the 1971 All Star Game, where he made a great catch robbing someone of a HR. Maybe he was aiming at her.
