I started seeing it a year or two ago with card replacements.
I’ve never read up on why the change. I’m sure it is plenty imperfect.

I have 7 credit cards. Not sure why I need that many. Anyways, 5 out of the 7…numbers are on the back.
I am down to three, and have no intent of increasing.
Biggest reason for is that it feels like too much for me to monitor for fraud.
Credit card numbers get compromised from time to time.
About 5 to 7 years ago[not sure of the exact time frame.], a lot of credit card companies were giving $$$ incentive to get a card from them. Had to spend so much money and would be rewarded with a bonus of about 250 to 450 dollars.
Believe they were American Express Wells Fargo and Capital One.
